Project Profile

“Making the region a more vibrant place to live, work, and play.” Great Rivers Greenway is a public agency developing a dynamic network of greenways that are connecting the rivers, parks, and communities of the St. Louis, MO region. The current greenways span 125 miles and will continue to grow to a total of 600 miles according to the Great Rivers Greenway “River Ring” plan. In September 2018, we were awarded a project by Gershenson Construction to manufacture a 16 ft x 11 ft pedestrian underpass and a 4 ft x 4 ft box culvert extension for the Gravois Greenway section. Our Roxana plant produced both products, with the extension being delivered in February and the pedestrian underpass in April. This project connects two existing greenways, the River des Peres Greenway and Orlando’s Greenway.

Since the culvert was set on a slope, both end sections and headwalls had to be skewed so that the walls were completely vertical. Another challenge was that the underpass needed to meet up with an MSE retaining wall. The proximity to the N I-55 interstate and relatively small worksite required tight coordination with product deliveries. The 16 ft x 11 ft box culvert was an alternative to an arch culvert. Gershenson chose our alternate due to the lower cost and schedule demands. We are able to handle large special design culverts like this in a timely manner and have proven ourselves to be an upstanding partner of Gershenson Construction from past projects. An asphalt trail will run through the tunnel with upward lighting from the ground shining on the painted white walls. Additionally, a steel sign will be mounted on the precast headwalls. Once finished, the underpass will be aesthetically pleasing and match the rest of the Gravois Greenway.
